Important Information on the Disability Tax Credit

Dear friend, I hope you and your family are doing well. It is tax season. The deadline to file your income tax return is April 30, 2026. You may recall that for many years, I hosted a Disability Tax Credit Workshop each year as your Member of Parliament. The workshop was very popular because it helped many people better understand the eligibility criteria for the program. |

Unfortunately, many people with disabilities are living below the poverty line. The cost of living has skyrocketed, and many are struggling to pay rent, put food on the table, or afford their medications. I have long been a critic of the Disability Tax Credit program because it is very restrictive, and it is only available to those who pay income tax. When I was in Parliament, I tabled Motion M-6 to make the Disability Tax Credit refundable. This would mean that individuals with disabilities, regardless of their income level, could receive the full value of the credit as a payment even if they owe no income tax. Many people with disabilities are struggling, and I have received numerous emails from former constituents requesting information about the Disability Tax Credit. I would like to share with you my Disability Tax Credit Workshop, recorded by New West Community TV in 2021:https://newwest.tv/media/canadas-disability-tax-credit You can also find more information about the Disability Tax Credit on the Government of Canada website:https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/segments/tax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities/disability-tax-credit.html Warm regards, Peter Julian Former MP New Westminster Burnaby |
